"Oh Lord God, deliver us in Thy due time from the little narrow prison, almost as it were, total darkness of paper, pen and ink and a crooked, broken, scattered and imperfect language."

-Joseph Smith

"Life's most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?"

- Martin Luther King Jr.

The Gods we worship write their names on our faces, be sure of that. And a person will worship something, have no doubt of that either. One may think that tribute is paid in secret, in the dark recesses of his or her heart, but it is not. That which dominates imagination and thoughts will determine life and character. Therefore it behooves us to be careful what we are worshiping. For what we are worshiping, we are
becoming.

Going to the Polls

Today's the day. I am just about to leave to go cast my vote. This election has been frustrating for me. In the past I have so disliked the Democratic candidates that it was quite easy for me to vote for the Republican one. But this round has been interesting. Initially, when Obama was a bit of a no-name I had read about him and was telling people about him because he was interesting. At that time I had a hard time finding any solid information on what he stood for. Then he got bigger and bigger and before we knew it he was in the running in a real way. Anyway, the more I learned about each candidate, however, and the more I read about their plans for various issues, their past lives, and their shady connections, the more I was unhappy with either of them. I am tired of the two parties. I am tired of having to pick and choose which issues are most important to me and go with that party. There are none that represent all that is good and I think it is because they are playing the party game. They have to hold certain views. I don't consider myself any party and I wish that our government and our people would quit "partying". I agree and disagree with the Republican party on certain issues. I agree and disagree with the Democratic party on certain issues. Do I have to pick a favorite? I am tired of politicians and their honey coated words and hollow promises. When is someone with some real moral backbone going to stand up? I am sad to say that I feel as if I have come to a time when I have no hope in our political leaders. You hear the candidates say, "America is the greatest nation on the earth!" Well, that's all nice and sounds warm and fuzzy but we are only as great as our actions prove us to be. How arrogant we can be. There are plenty of nations of the world that are "great". And we are only great so long as we adhere to greatness. And I do not mean military might or being the most popular "world power". We need to evaluate what makes a nation great. I'd like to make a little analogy. The United States of America is likened unto Oprah Winfrey. She's good when she wants to be and can be a great force for good when it serves her. But she can turn right around and be a monumental force for ill. A force to be reckoned with. The fact is, right is right and wrong is wrong. And there is no party in existence that is wholly either. It's kind of as if we are...lukewarm.

Anyway, blah blah blah.
James Arrington for President! ;-)

I would totally vote for James, but only if you promise to mandate Halloween parties where the hosts HAVE to do the skeleton dance. Okay. That is all. ;)

Don't get discouraged. We've been saying the same thing ever since we were old enough to vote. But it is important to keep voting. Like one of my workmates said "You can't complain if you didn't vote!".

What WE stand for is what is important. The pendulum continually swings. It seems to be way out at the end of it's course right now. Hopefully we will live to see it come back to the middle.

Oh, by the way, I would NOT vote for James. He is too good to be run through the mill of political dirt slinging. I really like Sarah Pallin and look what they did to her, trying to find something to discredit her. It can be devastating to a family. James will have to wait until his family is older before I will vote for him :) I love him too much. MOM

Sorry about another comment, but I just got this story in email and thought it fit this as well as your next post, so wanted to share it here:

WHEN YOUR HUT'S ON FIRE!!!!

The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a small, uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him. Every day he scanned the horizon for help, but none seemed forthcoming. Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect him from the elements, and to store his few possessions. One day, after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames, with smoke rolling up to the sky. He felt the worst had happened, and everything was lost. He was stunned with disbelief, grief, and anger. He cried out, 'God! How could you do this to me?' Early the next day, he was awakened by the sound of a ship approaching the island! It had come to rescue him! 'How did you know I was here?' asked the weary man of his rescuers. 'We saw your smoke signal,' they replied. The Moral of This Story: It's easy to get discouraged when things are going bad, but we shouldn't lose heart, because God is at work in our lives, even in the midst of our pain and suffering. Remember that the next time your little hut seems to be burning to the ground. It just may be a smoke signal that summons the Grace of God. P.S. You may want to consider passing this on, because you never know who feels as if their hut is on fire today.

Amen. I am so glad the election is over! It will be interesting to see where things go from here. On another related, but different note, JT and I just finished listening to "Dreams from my Father" by Barak Obama. It doesn't talk about politics at all. It describes his journey to make sense of his life history. He talks a lot about how living in a transracial family affected him and his own identity. It was very thought-provoking, and applicable raising black children. Anyway--you rock.

Oh, and by the way, I was very tempted to write in Jack Johnson..he's so chill, and environmentally friendly. James would also be a good pick.
